This is a very interesting article because we are all paying such a big fee for these apps and not even utilizing them. I myself have a blackberry and I very rarely even look to see what apps are availible. It is not specified in the monthly fee, but it is definetly the reason we pay so much for these smart phones. They should have information sessions availible about how to use/find apps.
Many Apps are pre-downloaded or the company gives you a free trial which tricks you into buying the apps. My mom has a blackberry- with Apps on it- and she is not even sure what an app is. However, she is still paying that monthly fee. On the other hand I have an android incredible and I am constantly checking to see what new (FREE) apps are available.The older generation aren;t the typical early adopters of new technology such as apps.
I have a blackberry and pay the fee of $30 dollars a month to have the service on my phone, along with other members of my family who have smartphones. However I don't look at a lot of the applications because they are not free. The Android service offers more free applications compared to some other services. Our generation is up to date with tech changes more so than our parents generation. In time they will need to understand, because most phones are turning into smartphones!
