It’s great that they are trying to establish a place in this new market, but I feel that Sony will be at a serious disadvantage. Amazon and Apple have serious market share when it comes to this category of products, and I think Sony will have a hard time catching up. Every brand should diversify, but I think Sony could use its resources in a better way.
I agree with Jess thast Sony will be at a serious disadvantage because of the brand recognition people often have when they think of Sony.
I do think however, that Sony was smart in allowing books to be borrowed from the public library and adding the "Goodreads" feature to its E-Readers. It should be interesting to see if consumers are receptive to this new e-reader.
Sony always seems to enter the market after another huge company has established brand identity with a product. Perhaps a better option for them would be to try and get ahead with a new idea instead of piggy backing and falling behind. I do agree with Kate about borrowing books. It is a smart idea and may draw in more customers who think it is a cheaper option.
